NFTs are often discussed in the context of art and gaming, but real adoption in BtoB and BtoC operations is steadily spreading. This article organizes five areas where NFTs are already in active use, along with points to consider before adoption and a rough guide to development cost. It also covers the criteria worth checking when commissioning an outside vendor for an NFT-based new business, such as track record, legal readiness, how a vendor approaches moving on from a PoC, and how they think about cost.
In one line: enterprise use of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) is not about the speculative context of art or gaming — it means incorporating them into real BtoB/BtoC operations across five areas: membership cards, ticketing, supply-chain authenticity, credentialing, and digital twins. What NFTs mean for enterprises: substance versus speculation
At its core, an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is proof of ownership of digital data. A token recorded on a blockchain can manage, in a tamper-proof way, who holds it and when it was transferred.
There was a period when speculative price swings drew most of the attention, but from an enterprise-adoption standpoint the value lies in proving ownership, managing transfer history, and granting permissions. This needs to be understood separately from high-value art sales.

- Proves on-chain who holds a piece of digital data, without depending on a physical certificate or a centralized database.
- Transfer-history management
- Records who transferred what to whom and when, in a tamper-proof way — this connects directly to supply-chain and certificate provenance management.

- Access to a specific service, piece of content, or right can be granted only to NFT holders, which is applied to membership cards and license management.

- Membership and digital passes: loyalty programs
- Issuing an NFT as a membership card gives holders access to perks, discounts, or early sales. Unlike a conventional points card, secondary-market trading is possible, so the membership itself carries market value. Starbucks' "Odyssey" is a well-known example, credited with lifting engagement and acquiring new customers at the same time. Adoption is also progressing in Japan in real estate, food service, and entertainment.
- Supply-chain management: product traceability
- Recording data onto an NFT at each stage of manufacturing, transport, and sale creates a tamper-proof proof of provenance. In luxury goods, LVMH, Prada, and Richemont jointly established the Aura Blockchain Consortium to use it for authenticity verification. In food, traceability NFTs are also moving toward practical use for preventing origin misrepresentation and managing allergen information.
- Digital certificates: credentials, completion, and diplomas
- When an educational institution or certifying body issues a certificate as an NFT, forgery becomes harder and verification becomes instant. MIT is an early example, having issued digital diplomas using Blockcerts. In Japan, several universities and private schools have adopted completion-certificate NFTs, and embedding them in profiles such as LinkedIn is broadening their use in hiring.
- Tourism and regional revitalization: NFT stamp rallies and proof of visit
- Tourist destinations and regional events run NFT stamp rallies, distributing proof of a visit as a digital asset. Municipalities such as Shinano, Nagano Prefecture, and municipalities in Toyama Prefecture have run pilot programs and confirmed that it functions as an incentive to visit again. Designing it so holding the NFT also grants local currency or product-exchange rights can build an economic ecosystem on top of it as well.
- IP licensing and digital content: secondary-creation rights management
- Embedding license terms into an NFT lets a company manage commercial-use rights and secondary-creation rights on-chain. Yuga Labs' "BAYC" is known as a model that granted holders commercial-use rights, letting holders build their own brands off it. Adoption in Japan is increasing in anime, gaming, and music IP, with smart contracts also automating royalty distribution.

Web3 and blockchain developmentPoints to consider before adoption
Most NFT adoption failures trace back to issues overlooked at the design stage, before development starts. Sorting out the four points below in advance meaningfully cuts the cost of fixing things after release.
- Chain selection
- There are many options — Ethereum, Polygon, Solana — and the right choice depends on matching gas cost, processing speed, and ecosystem maturity to the intended use. For consumer-facing services, an L2 such as Polygon is often the realistic choice.
- Checking regulation
- Depending on an NFT's characteristics, it can fall under Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act or Payment Services Act. Skipping upfront confirmation with a law firm or the relevant authorities risks being forced to halt operations after release.
- Designing the user experience
- Support for general users unfamiliar with wallet operations is the real bottleneck for adoption. Account abstraction (AA) and social-login integration need to be used to design a Web2-like experience.
- Modeling cost
- Estimate gas cost for issuing and transferring NFTs, infrastructure upkeep, and operational staffing before the PoC, including how cost scales as user and issuance counts grow.
How to choose a vendor for an NFT-based new business
Commissioning an NFT-based new business to an outside vendor calls for different criteria than a typical web-development order. Whether the vendor can handle smart-contract security, regulatory response, and UX design for general users determines whether the result can actually be operated after release. The points below are what we weigh in our own engagements as a vendor; they are a starting point for due diligence, not a universal answer.
- A track record close to your own use case — membership cards, certificates, and traceability each call for different design know-how, so check for experience close to the area you are targeting rather than a vague claim of being "Web3-capable"
- Smart-contract auditing and a security posture — a vulnerability in a design that handles assets or permissions can cause a serious incident, so check whether design review and external audits are a given, in-house or through a partner
- Legal and regulatory response — check whether the vendor can arrange confirmation with lawyers or authorities and sort out legal questions early
- Contract design that lets you start small — check whether they can propose starting with a small trial before committing to full development, since being able to produce material for internal approval at the PoC stage lowers the burden of decision-making
- End-user UX design capability — check whether they can design a Web2-like experience using account abstraction or social login for users unfamiliar with wallets
- Proposals that account for ongoing operations — check whether they can sustain infrastructure, incident response, and feature additions after launch, and explain the cost of that operating phase early on
